3** - 14* ?? Who decides?!

Ever notice that the electoral numbers never add up? Estimates of margin of victory are all over the place... Why is it so hard to figure out, I mean sure, there are swing states, but the total number should never change, right?

I blame the hanging chads! HA!

That's a very good question. Do some of the states apportion their electoral votes proportional to the popular vote? Maybe there's some variation depending on how you calculate it...just a guess.

(Something I read made me think that not all states automatically allot all their electoral votes to the winner of the state. But I could be wrong.)

There are 538 though, right? So regardless of how they are awarded, there should be a sum of 538. If there are 12 donuts in a box and I give 3 to you and 9 to the baby, then there are still 12...running a story that says 3 to you and 8 to the baby is weird and leaves 1 donut in some bizarre and unkown location for later or what?

Right?

Hmmm...maybe any states that allocate piecemeal are holding a couple of their votes for third-party types? Bob Barr? Ralph Nader?

(I really have no idea.)
